MEDIUM PRIORITY
Regarding the serious Hurricane Ike in the Atlantic, Collier County Emergency Management Department has been in consultation with the Weather Service Offices and the Florida Division of Emergency Management. This serious storm poses concern for Collier County for high winds and storm surge potential. No protective actions or guidance are being recommended for the west coast of Florida over the next several hours.
Our recommendations for readiness are as follows:
#1. Take the time to review and update your family disaster plan. If you don't have a plan, you can still make one. Go to the following website (www.FloridaDisaster.org) and click on the icon "Get a Family Plan".
#2. Monitor your media sources throughout the weekend for changes in the weather system. Use this time to finalize all your preparedness efforts.
#3. One area of concern might be wind and rain and possible tornado watches and warnings that may begin on Monday and run through Tuesday night or Wednesday morning for inland Collier County.
#4. No shelter operations, evacuations, or protective action recommendations are being made or scheduled at this time.
#5. Mobile home residents should begin carefully reviewing their preparedness plans.

MEDIUM PRIORITY
Collier County Emergency Management reminds residents that Collier County is NOT supplying sandbags or sand for bags. In preparation for Hurricane Ike, it is recommended using peat moss or bags of topsoil which can be purchased at home improvement stores or landscaping companies.

MEDIUM PRIORITY
Boating and Water Safety
• People are encouraged to take protective measures near bodies of water (all coastal and tidal Collier County) due to storm surge, rapid water currents and possible gulf rip currents.
Hurricanes and tropical storms have the potential to damage boats even if the area is not directly hit with a storm. High winds and 12-foot seas can exist up to 150 miles away from the eye of a storm. Early preparation is the key to survivability of your vessel.
"Trailerable" Boats
Trailerable boats should be moved from the water to a safe location on dry land. Partially fill boats with water to add weight and stability. Boat and trailer should both be housed indoors, if possible. If boat and trailer are housed outdoors, secure boat and trailer unit to the ground using ground hooks and straps. If you choose to evacuate out of town, it is best to take your trailerable boats with you to ensure its safety.
Moored Boats
Moored boats should be secured with double mooring lines and double spring lines. Distribute the load on the boat using several cleats. Remove loose articles on deck and secure all hatches and doors. Shut off fuel lines and disconnect electric, water, and other connections.
Anchoring Out
If anchoring a boat out, position boat on the lee side of protective land when possible. The length of anchor lines should be a minimum of six to nine times the depth of the water to compensate for storm surge and swing. Be sure to use chafing gear. Please note that the position of the boat may change dramatically as a storm passes and the wind shifts.
Live Aboards
It is strongly recommended that people who live aboard their boats seek shelter on dry land during a storm event. Persons who do choose to remain aboard their boat during a storm event are strongly encouraged to notify someone on land of their intent. Be sure to dress in safety gear such as a dry suit and floatation devices. Battery operated radio and distress equipment are vital to monitor the progress of the storm and to call for assistance as needed.

HIGH PRIORITY
Based on the Saturday, September 6, forecasts from the National Hurricane Center, the Collier County Emergency Management Department continues to encourage residents to monitor Hurricane Ike closely. At this point there are no evacuations or closures in place for Collier County.
